Direct (front) thrust

This is the basic thrusting movement use in many jo techniques.

Start in left hanmi with the base of the jo resting on the mat directly in front of your left big toe. Hold the jo with your left hand. Extend the top of the jo towards your opponent; the base will rise and the jo should naturally land in the palm of your right hand. Slide your right hand down to the end as you bring the jo to a horizontal position, tsuki no kame.

Your feet slide forward and off the line-of-attack so that your feet make an angle of 15-25 degrees from the line-of-attack. As you move off-the-line, slide the jo forwards through your left hand. Your right hand will finish palm-up directly in front of your sternum. Your left forearm should be parallel to the jo when the thrust is complete. Finally, as you complete the strike, make sure that your center drops.
