Typical raw white-light reflectance measurements using endoscopic probe

Typical white-light reflectance spectra are shown in the figure. Three normal tissue sites and three cancerous tissue sites were measured in the esophagus of a patient. For comparison, the figure also shows the spectrum obtained when the probe was submerged in an standard solution containing 2% lipid (g lipid per 100 ml solution) as scatterer and added dye as absorber.

These spectral shapes basically show the spectral content of the light source and the spectral sensitivity of the detector, modified by the reflectance of the tissue or standard solution. The reduction in signal in the 500-600 nm range is due to the blood content of the tissue sites.
