A "MEASUREMENT" is defined as the ratio of a tissue measurement normalized by a measurement of the standard. This ratio causes the wavelength-dependence on the light source's power (S) and the wavelength-dependence of the detector sensitivity to cancel.

The factors R and Rstd describe the transport of light from the source through the tissue to reach the collection port.

The factor f describes the collection efficiency for light that reaches the collection port after diffusion through the tissue to actually enter the fiber and be successfully guided down the optical fiber to the detector.
