The DEPTH OF NECROSIS (or apoptosis) is predicted by rearranging the equation from the previous slide to solve for z_necrosis.

The z_necrosis is linearly proportional to the optical penetration depth, but is proportional to the logarithm of all other factors. Therefore, doubling the optical penetration depth will double the z_necrosis. However, one must change any other term 7.4-fold in order to double z_necrosis.

The optics of the tissue play a major role in the depth of necrosis (or apoptosis). Here is an example calculation of z_necrosis that illustrates typical values for a generic photosensitizer and generic soft tissue.
