The incident light I_o is parallel polarized. As the light propagates through increasing thicknesses of scattering tissue, the transmitted parallel light drops from 1 to 1/2, and the transmitted perpendicular light rises from 0 to 1/2. When the light is fully randomized, both the parallel and perpendicular components are equal to 1/2.
