DALLAS, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical City Dallas Hospital will host the United States' first minimally invasive transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) heart surgery. The first of three procedures scheduled for Monday, January 19, starts at 7:30 a.m.
Transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) is a procedure being investigated as an alternative for patients who have no other options to get blood supply to an ailing heart. During the procedure, 20 to 40 channels are drilled directly into the heart with a laser. These channels allow for oxygenated blood to flow into the diseased heart muscle. By offering this surgery minimally invasive, the surgeons are able to perform the surgery by making a few small incisions in the chest wall instead of cracking the breastbone. This is less traumatic for the patient and promotes a more rapid recovery. Additionally, surgeons using this minimally invasive technique operate on a beating heart, avoiding the use and complication of the heart-lung machine.
